Big Toe Arthritis (Hallux Rigidus)

Arthritis of the big toe joint is also known as Hallux Rigidus or Hallux Limitus. People will often describe pain, swelling, and stiffness in the great toe. The joint, the 1st MTP joint, becomes painful when bending or moving the toe.

In certain instances, bone spurs will grow on top the of the joint, protrude upwards, and rub the tops of shoes. Repetitive rubbing produces inflammation, pain and sensitivity.

Multiple treatment options exist for Hallux Rigidus.

  • Shoe inserts, stiff shoes

  • Medications, injections and topical creams

  • Surgical Options

Surgical options vary greatly. In less severe cases joint preserving methods such as a cheilectomy or osteotomy is recommended. In more severe cases, where arthritis has damaged the joint beyond preservation, a fusion or arthrodesis recommended.
